Unkind, bullying or cyberbullying?
Read what happened. Does it keep happening? Is it online? Then choose a box.
Card 1 of 9
Every day at break, one pupil pushes another over.
Does it keep happening? Is it happening online? Drag the card to a box, or tap a box.
What the words mean
- Unkind: someone is mean once or twice.
- Bullying: repeated behaviour that is meant to hurt someone.
- Cyberbullying: bullying that happens online, on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Why cyberbullying is so harmful
Devices are around us most of the time, so a message can arrive at any time. It is also hard for adults to notice, because often only the person receiving the messages can see them. That is why it is so important to tell an adult you trust.
For teachers
This tool goes with Unit 1, Lessons 2 and 3 of the Year 4 Inspire Computing student book.
- Prepare first. Some pupils may have lived through this. Tell the class what the topic is before you begin, and let a pupil step out if they need to. Do not ask anyone to share their own experience.
- Before the screen: draw two lines on the floor, one for "keeps happening" and one for "online". Read a card, and let pupils stand where they think it belongs.
- Please check this card: the book does not say where one rude online comment belongs. Here it is "unkind", because bullying is repeated, and the reason still says to tell an adult. Change this if you teach it differently.
- Exit question: how is cyberbullying different from other bullying?
- Nothing a pupil does here is saved or sent anywhere.
More to try
- Write a list of kind things people can do if they see someone being unkind.
- Make a class poster: who can we tell?
